I hope this little walk through answers all your questions, if you still have some post them here and I'll do my best to answer them.

First off, download Mumble (Latest release) then install. Follow the installer instructions and you are done.

When you launch Mumble for the first time it will run the Audio Wizard. Please do not cancel the wizard.

Making sure you are in the very first channel, right under Tribute to Mortality, go to Self > Register. After you have done that page/whisper an Officer or a Junior officer in order to inform them that you have registered. They will add you to the Member group. It is that group that allows access you the guild channels, which is more secure than passwords. Immediately after you have been added to group you might still be muted. Just page an Officer again to have that fixed.

For the officers and junior officers, a couple of notes.

We can register users ourselves. Ideally people can do this themselves, but if they have no clue what they're doing it may be best just to bite the bullet and do it yourself. Just right-click on their name and select Register.

In order to add people to the members group, perform the following steps:
  1. While on Mumble, right-click on Tribute to Mortality at the top of the channel tree.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Select the Groups tab.
  4. Where it says Group, use the drop-down list to pick members.
  5. At the bottom-right under the Members column, enter the name(s) of the person(s) to be added to the group.
  6. Press the Add button.
  7. Press OK at the bottom. If you fail to do this, any changes that you have implemented will not be saved!

You must begin this process by right-clicking on Tribute to Mortality. While you can access the Edit and groups from any channel, doing so will actually create changes that only affect that channel; making changes under Tribute to Mortality will apply them globally.

Why do some voices sound metallic/robotic?

Mumble is optimized for low latency so when your connection has a lot of variance ping wise some audio packets will arrive to late for mumble to consider them. A bad connection might even lose packets completely. If that happens the codec tries to "cover up" the fact it misses data. Before version 1.2.1 our new codec CELT was not as good at this as Speex (the old codec) so make sure you use a recent version. Mumble also has a so-called "jitter buffer" that tries to counteract the ping variance issues but it is not perfect, we are currently collecting usage data to improve it.

You can usually reduce the artifacts by increasing buffer sizes, but a (ping wise) stable connection is the best solution. Be aware that the ping has to be stable from the sender to the server and back to the receiving end.

The issues mentioned before are the most common ones. Some people might hear metallic sounding voices even with a stable ping on both ends. This might be a result of noise filtering by Mumble. If the environment of the sender is especially noisy, some parts of the voice will be filtered as well. The alternative would be noisy sound, meaning precious bandwidth would be used to encode noise and the clarity of the voice would also decrease.

Wait... So how do I fix it????
This fix only really works for the person who sounds metallic/robotic, but it could work for you as well.

1. Go to configure at top left
2. Press text to speech to un-tick it
3. ???
4. Profit

But that didn't work!!!

Than there isn't much you can do except try to get a more stable connection.
